They reference the doctrine of scripture and are spiritual praises to God, but they do not always have lyrics that line up with the truth of scripture. We should be able to sing every lyric with the understanding for it to be profitable as praise to God. We also do not want to be false prophets or blasphemers! 1 Corinthians 14:15 KJV What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. John 4:24 KJV God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. Sometimes we may get song lyrics in our mind that we think are in scripture. Recently I was speaking with brother Andrey and he thought the word "passions" was in scripture but it was not. The reason he thinks he thought this was because a hymn had that word in it. We may sing these songs thinking the words are in scripture but they are not always there. But it is right to change the hymn lyrics? Here is an example of a hymn which is contrary to scripture on the last line: The Youth of The World (last line of verse 4) "Trust us with thy greatest task, Lord, And with pride our hearts shall thrill" This cannot be sung with the understanding so I changed the lyrics to "Trust us with thy greatest task, Lord, And we will be faithful still" Here is another example of a song that is contrary to scripture: [MP #487] Come Thou, Almighty King VERSE 5 LINE 1 "To the great One in three, E-ter-nal praises be" This cannot be sung with the understanding. The truth is "these three are one". God is not "One in three". This lyric could be changed to "To the great One in-deed" or "To the great glo-ri-ous King, e-ter-nal prai-ses sing" and the song could be sung with the understanding. 1 John 5:7 KJV For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. John 10:30 KJV I and my Father are one. We should not be singing songs that are contrary to scripture or put forth heresies. There also may be times you completely remove a song from your memory because it is unable to be corrected. Psalm 119:104 KJV Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way. There are times you can change the lyrics to songs. However, do not change the lyrics and claim they are the original author's lyrics. This is a lie. Psalm 119:163 KJV I hate and abhor lying: but thy law do I love. In this video study you should have a King James Bible with you to turn to the scriptures presented. Also a Melody Publications hymnal will be useful as that is the one I use in this study for the song examples.
